This is one of my favorite songs to sing when we are just needing to pass time. Like when we are waiting in the car for dad, or dinner is taking “sooo long” to be ready. The repetitive nature makes it perfect for young children to be able to learn to sing along quickly.

Lyrics

5 little ducks went out to play, over the hill and far away.

When the momma ducked called “Quack Quack Quack”

4 little ducks came waddling back!

4 little ducks went out to play, over the hill and far away.

When the momma ducked called “Quack Quack Quack”

3 little ducks came waddling back!

3 little ducks went out to play, over the hill and far away.

When the momma ducked called “Quack Quack Quack”

2 little ducks came waddling back!

2 little ducks went out to play, over the hill and far away.

When the momma ducked called “Quack Quack Quack”

1 little duck came waddling back!

1 little duck went out to play, over the hill and far away.

When the momma ducked called “Quack Quack Quack”

no little ducks came waddling back!

No little ducks went out to play, over the hill and far away.

When the daddy ducked called “Quack Quack Quack”

5 little ducks came waddling back!

Strategies to extend learning

Hold up your fingers. This tip is short and simple, but oh so powerful. As you sing the numbers in this song, hold up that amount of fingers. This puts a concrete image to the number to help your child absorb the word as well as the meaning.

Recognize the learning happening:

This short song has two powerful lessons embedded in its lyrics.

1- math concepts and 2- rhyming.

You can build on these concepts by relating them back to familiar experiences your child will remember. Or by keeping the conversation going about numerical value or rhyming.
